Starting in 2011, Leitten Consulting developed and published a series of studies focused on Medicare spending for Durable Medical Equipment [DME]. The original study in 2011 showed that Medicare spending on DME was beneficial. For every dollar Medicare invested in DME, it saved multiple dollars in reduced healthcare costs by avoiding medical complications that would have resulted if those investments had not been made. Updates since the original study showed that Medicare spending on DME since 2011 continued to bear fruit, dramatically lowering the cost to Medicare for treating the medical complications that continued to arise where investment in DME was not made. The published studies are presented below.
